NERANJA MANASU
Vijayakanth and Susan in "Neranja Manasu"... commendable performance
Cast: Vijayakanth, Susan, Sampath, Manorama, Vinu Chakravarthy, Nasser and Mansoor Ali Khan
Banner: G. J. Cinema
Credits: Direction: Samudirakani; music: Karthik Raja
Storyline: How one person can act as a catalyst and transform the environment in an entire village forms the theme of G. J. Cinema's "Neranja Manasu".
Directed by Samudirakani, the film has Vijayakanth in the lead. People of Suriyakudi eke out a living by stealing from neighbouring villages. As the hero is born on a day when the residents pray to Ayyanar, he is named after the deity. From childhood, Ayyanar is a do-gooder but has an enemy in Sivanandi, who kills his own father for money. Ayyanar exposes Sivanandi when the police arrive. Sivanandi comes back from jail after 20 years with the sole aim of killing Ayyanar. Does he succeed?
The film has a rustic feel about it. Vijayakanth who has shed a lot of weight fits the role to a T. New face Susan proves to be promising. Another new find Sampath, who plays Sivanandi, has come up with a neat performance. Manorama and Vinu Chakravarthy sparkle in their roles. A forgotten Ammukutty Pushpamala, a comedienne of yesteryear, shows that her histrionics are still intact. Venkat Prabhu has been wasted. "Pasi" Sathya, Nasser, Senthil and Mansoor Ali Khan are also in the cast.
Karthik Raja's re-recording skills come to the fore while V. Prabhat's camerawork is commendable.
Though the storyline is run-of-the-mill, the treatment and screenplay are worth a mention. Dialogue by C. Balasubramani enhances the proceedings, particularly the scenes involving the hero, the villain and the collector, in the latter half of the film. Editor Anil Malnatt's work is good and this is his 100th film. The film, produced by V. Gnanavel and V. Jayaprakash, is like a whiff of fresh air for an urban audience.
