What's new on the Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada film scene

"Black" magic: Mamooty

DEEPAVALI IS not a major festival in Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Karnataka, though Id is celebrated in a big way. In Kerala, four Malayalam films are releasing this festival season.

In Telugu, K.Viswanath's "Swarabhishekam" has just released and Ravi Teja's "Chanti" is due for release on Friday. K.Viswanath is Telugu cinema's avant garde director known for his films such as "Sankarabharanam", based on classical music, is back after a nine-year hiatus.

"Swarabhishekam" is a musical which deals with family values, tradition and sacrifice. It is another film steeped in classical music and Vidyasagar has scored some great numbers. Srikanth, Urvashi and Laya are in the cast.

Ravi Teja's "Chanti" is an action entertainer with a comic touch. Charmy plays the heroine. Another highlight of this Sobhan-directed film is that Ravi Teja gets a chance to mimic veteran actors such as NTR and Nageswara Rao.

Four releases in Malayalam

In Malayalam, top stars Mammootty, Mohanlal and Dileep are having their Ramzan releases with "Black", "Mambazhakalam" and "Kathavaseshan".

Noted director Kamal is also releasing his "Perumazhakalam", a female-oriented subject with two leading heroines Meera Jasmine and Kavya Madhavan.

Director Joshi's "Mambazhakalam" is a family entertainer with Mohanlal and Shobhana in the lead. The story is about a Gulf-returned Malayalee who faces problems when his family members turn against him. Mammootty's "Black" is a stylishly shot action film written and directed by Renjith, the top commercial director. He plays the role of a hit man and SS music VJ Shreya Reddy, a Tamil girl on the run, is the heroine.

Avant garde director of K. Vishwanath... back after nine years.

Dileep, who is equally good at comedy, is all set for the festival with his offbeat "Kathavaseshan" produced by him and directed by T. V. Chandran, the art-house director. He plays Gopinatha Menon, a civil engineer who believes that a normal guy need not be a politician or social worker to voice his views. He has Jyothirmayi for company.

"Perumazhakalam" is directed by Kamal, who believes in experimenting with subjects that appeal to family audience. The film is about the bonding between a Muslim boy and a Hindu girl which creates communal tension.

Big budget Kannada films

In Kannada, two films "Nalla" and "News" are ready for release. "Nalla", a mass entertainer from Sudeep and Sangeetha with the music of Venkat-Narayanan, has the potential to become a hit.

The Upendra-Reema Sen-Renuka Menon starrer "News" is a big budget film that the trade is eagerly awaiting. Guru Kiran is the music director and Upendra plays a different role in this film.
