Beautiful ensembles

Embroidered outfits in vibrant colours are the preferred choice for Eid, says JESSINA ABOOBACKER.

Dressed up for the occasion.

ALONG WITH prayers, feasting, meetings, visiting and eating all mark the festival of Eid. After the month long, staunch Ramadan fast, Eid is time to celebrate and time to dress up.

People begin to shop for the occasion as soon the first ten days of Ramadan are over. Most of the boutiques in the town stockpile for Eid shopping and the shops presently are having a field day.

More for women

When it comes to dressing, women have more to choose from. And when it comes to clothes Muslim women experiment a lot and want something new in every pick they make. Prices are usually negotiable with them. Buying of the Perunnal Kodi is an exhilarating celebration in itself. "This season we have stocked up a lot of bright colours with heavy worked materials and dupattas. We have variety in crepes, maheshwaris, chanderis, chiffons, kottas, cottons etc. Some heavy work on the material is binding. Kantha work, sequence on chiffon, khari on georgettes etc. We have some exclusive Phulkari work from Rajasthan and Gotta Patti work as well in the pricey variety," say Sulekha Ashraf and Sherin Basheer of Tamanna, Panampilly Nagar.

"This year as Eid and Diwali are being celebrated with a day's difference, we have a collection for both the occasion. The choice of the Muslims is typical and they look for eye catching and vibrant colours. They usually do not buy a cotton suit or any pastel colours for the festivals. I have exclusive stock in from Mumbai for this season," says Bhagwathy Sangrajkar of `Vastra' in Esplanade.

Heavily worked fabrics

" Materials, which fall gracefully, like georgettes, crepes, chiffons are the ones ruling the roost, at least for sometime now. `Khari' work is still in fashion though it was on the verge of bidding farewell to the fashion scenario. A lot of Karachi work is also on the shelves. Experiments with patterns and work on sleeves and changing lengths of the `Kurthi' are the major love of the women folks," says Rama Sangeeth of `Sangrama' on Mullaserry Canal Road.

"Muslim women are more comfortable with pulsating colours than pastel colours. So, this season it's all magenta, purple, yellow, orange, maroon etc. Embroidery like `aari', `gotta patti', machine embroidery, mirror work are all well combined with the vibrant colours to give that festive look. They need glitter and work somewhere along the seams. All women like to look special and outstanding when they go for the Id Prayers to the Idgahs in the city. They would prefer for the dupatta to stay well on the heads in the traditional manner, " says Janice of `Silhouette', Esplanade.

And go ahead and wear the most beautiful outfit for Eid as there is a lot to choose from.
