Prayers as ring tones for Diwali
"Prayers for Diwali"
Times Music; Cassette: Rs 65
Nothing illustrates better how the high tech and the holy have morphed together, than the string of numbers that are printed across the inlay card of this seasonal musical offering. There are 20 odd tracks neatly divided one on each side of the cassette, into `morning' and `evening' prayers... . From `pratahsmaranam' and `snan mantra' to accompany those early morning ablutions to a `sayam ganesha smaranam' and the `ashtalakshmi stotra' to provide a soulful background to Diwali day. The individual singers are not identified; but they represent such household names like Usha Mangeshkar, Sadhna Sargam, Shweta Pandit, Vijay Joshi and Ravindra Sathe.
Against five of these tracks you can find six-digit numbers listed. They are the reference numbers of the ring tones that you can download on to most handsets. In other words, having listened to `deep poojanam', you can then make that your custom ring tone by dialing 329829 with an appropriate SMS code to your service provider.
Music albums like these have already made it easy for most of us to create that prayerful ambience on festival days the easy way, without having to exercise our own vocal chords in song. Now apparently, we can spread the mood to all who call us up on our mobiles. That's a `connected' Diwali for you!
