A late bloomer flowers with an exhibition of her paintings

GEETHA SHARMA is a housewife who is adept in handling the ladle as well as the easel. After years of hard work, Geetha is finally exhibiting her paintings at the Prasad Art Gallery in Ballalbagh.
Landscapes
The gallery is hosting 30 of her paintings at an exhibition entitled Prakruthi. Most of her works are landscapes in oil and watercolours, with a few portraits.
Unlike most people who take up painting early, Geetha was a late starter. "I started painting when I was 20after I saw my friends in action," she says.
It was later with her physician husband's support that her talent flowered. "I learnt painting from scratch, starting from the very basics, which included pencil sketching for nearly two years," she says.
Geetha honed her skills under the guidance of art teacher Shabbir Ali from the B.G.M. School of Fine Arts. Family friend and artist P.S. Punichithaya too has been a constant source of inspiration and support, a fact that she acknowledges wholeheartedly.
According to eminent art critic Ganesh Somayaji, the uniqueness of Geetha's work is in that she concentrates exclusively on nature. She is an ardent nature lover who expresses her perception of nature in the form of landscapes. She enjoys painting and believes in art for art's sake.
Her interest in gardening also shows her closeness to nature. "There is not much accent on modernity in her works. It is her earnest desire that many people are able to enjoy and appreciate her fine strokes on canvas. Her dexterity in using various mediums too is her forte and the topic nature is easily understood by all," says Somayaji.
Hard work
For Geetha, the exhibition is the result of years of hard work. She says it was her husband P.K.S. Sharma, children and friends who were her source of courage. In fact, they were instrumental in bringing her art out of the confines of her drawing room.
The exhibition concludes tomorrow.
