The new big show

SONY TV's show "Indian Idol" (Thursday, 9.30 p.m.) is already creating waves. The Indianised version of "American Idol" was telecast on STAR World recently. Contestants have to sing before a panel of judges comprising Anu Malik, Sonu Nigam and Farah Khan. The idea is to find a singer, who will get a Rs. one-crore contract! According to hosts Aman Varma and Mini Mathur, the judges are brutally frank and make remarks such as "You will never make a good singer" or "You are so bad that even if you were the only singer in a competition, you will be the last." At the same time, the judges are equally liberal with their praises if the singer is talented. "Indian Idol" will soon have Telugu and Tamil versions.
