Stars all the way

FILM-BASED programmes dominated the Tamil channels on Deepavali day. There was no escape from the programmes featuring film personalities as advertisers had a field day.

Though all channels began the day early with spiritual programmes, there was nothing on the significance of the festival.

The pick was the one with Kamal Hassan going down musical lane in a programme titled "Kalaka Povathu Yaru" on Jaya TV, anchored by Ramesh Aravind. Kamal sang some of his old hits along with SPB, S. Janaki and others. The banter between SPB and Kamal, and their experiences with maestro Ilaiyaraja were the highlight of this nearly three-hour show.

Vikram's MTV style "Jet Set Go" on Vijay TV had the star on a racing bike zipping on ECR, playing cricket with school children, taking a catamaran ride into the deep sea, bursting crackers with kids and finally, visiting the EC 41 disco.

The idea was to show Vikram as a cool guy, aimed at the younger audience. Vikram also had a live phone-in programme on Sun TV. He was, however, not too forthcoming when asked questions about his summer release, "Anniyan".
