When a kitten is born...

WANT MORE information on what happens when a cat is in labour? Read on. Most cats deliver without any complication. However, first-time mothers should be attended to by their owners until at least one or two kittens are born. If these are born quickly and without assistance, further attendance may not be necessary, although it is desirable. If the owner chooses to leave, make sure that the cat doesn't leave the birthing box to follow you.

Signs of labour

Signs of impending labour generally include nervousness and panting. The cat quits eating during the last 24 hours before she goes into labour. Her rectal temperature may drop to below 100 degree F. The drop in temperature may occur intermittently for several days prior to delivery but will remain constant for the last 24 hours.

If the delivery proceeds normally, a few contractions will discharge the kitten. It should exit the birth canal within 10 minutes of being visible. Following delivery, the mom licks the new born's face. She will then proceed to wash it and toss it about. This vigorous washing stimulates circulation causing the kitten to cry and begin breathing. It also dries the newborn's hair coat.

Professional assistance should be called during delivery if any of the following occur.

* 20 minutes of intense labour without the kitten being delivered.

* 10 minutes of intense labour occurs when a kitten or a fluid filled bubble is visible in the birth canal.

* Mother experiences sudden depression or marked lethargy.

* Mother's body temp exceeds 103 degree F via a rectal thermometer.

* Fresh blood discharges from the vagina for more than 10 minutes.

Once delivery is completed, the soiled newspapers should be removed and a soft bedding placed in the birthing box to enable the mother to accept the kittens and recline for nursing. The mom and litter should be examined by a vet within 24 hours of delivery to ensure complete delivery and a once-over for the kittens.

The mom will have bloody vaginal discharge for three to seven days after delivery. If it lasts longer than a week, the vet should informed.

Pet's Choice this month is Thilakavathy for giving us a simple tip to treat skin problems in dogs. Mix vasambu powder with coconut oil and apply on affected parts. Continue application till the mange becomes dry.
