The national seminar of chemical engineering students, 'Ripples-2004', that was held under the aegis of the Department of Chemical Engineering of Andhra University, besides sensible discussions and paper presentations highlighting the need of developing collaboration between universities and industries with introduction of suitable modifications in the curriculum, witnessed enjoyable cultural programmes as well in the evenings for two days.

Kudos to the young students of all the four years of the course, who organised the technical sessions, presented papers and rendered thought provoking discussions, without any inhibition also provided the much needed lighter and relaxing moments exhibiting their talents in drama, music and dance after the sessions.

The notable among the events presented were a brief veena recital by Sravanthi, dances from the feature films like 'Devadas' by Bhargavi and Sireesha, 'Pyaar Kiyato Darna Kya' by Durga Nagesh, 'Manmadharaajyam' by E. Ravikiran, the Lagan theme song (dance) by Suresh Kumar, Durga Nagesh, Rakesh, Vishnuvardhan, Ravikiran and Srirama Murthy, the 'Dhoom' theme song by Akhila and Swapna, rendering of film songs by Shafi, P.V. Gopal and Surendra, Sujatha, Kanchana and Lavanya. Kiran, Surabhi Patni and Siva Prasad conducted the programme with elan.

Earlier in the evening, the CMD of Kalpana Chemicals Limited (Hyderabad), an alumnus of the department, Buddhavarapu Narayana Murthy, who sacrificed a good job in ONGC and started his own chemical industry manufacturing chloro acetic acid, developed flow-sheets and started large-scale production of crucial chemicals, Methyl Cellulose, Agar Agar, Sodium Aligimate, Carboxy Methyl Cellulose, Venyl Acetate and Polyvinyl Alchohol, with indegenous technology to cater for the entire needs of ONGC and Hindustan Lever Limited, was felicitated by the Alumni Association, on the occasion. The doyen of chemical engineering study, research and development, G.J.V.J. Raju, was the chief guest. The group senior vice-president of the Reliance Industries, M. Ganapathi, the HoD, P.S. Sankara Rao, and the senior faculty members, K.V. Rao anmd Ravi Prasad, spoke.

The monthly meet, `Haasya Vallari' organised last Sunday by the Haasam Club with the Akashvani programme executive, Naganuri Venugopal, in the chair, was not only marked by large attendance but also by both quality and quantity of participation on the stage.

About 40 enthusiasts rendered rib-tickling jokes, parody skits and humorous songs. The hilarious comedy skits - 'Aythe Atu, Lekunte Itu' by Thrushna Velu and Safi and 'Tirupati Prayanam' by Repati Appa Rao and Mastan Reddy - stood out. While P. Venugopal, writer-poet Kovela and Ratnakumari won the awards instituted by Kallu Chidambaram T. Narayana Rao and the late Sumitra respectively, R. Appa Rao, Trushna Velu, Safi, Dappu Prasad, K. Appa Rao and Nalla Sriram received special prizes.

The Kopparapu Kavula Kalaapeetham celebrating the jayanti of the elder brother among the poet duo, Venkata Subbarayakavi, felicitated Utpala Satyanarayana and presented the peetham's annual puraskar to him. The function was held in the seminar hall of the AU Department of Telugu with its HoD, Parvathaneni Subba Rao, in the chair. 'Telugu Sahitya Charitra', an exhaustive treatise on the origin, development and progress of Telugu literature by D.W.A.N.A. Sastry was released by renowned writer-poet Yarlagadda Lakshmi Prasad on the occasion. Compering by Bharati Bhushana Rambhatla Nrusimha Sarma was a special attraction.

A scintillating 'charcha' (discussion) on `Streevaadam' was organised by Visakha Mahila Sahithi, an offshoot of the noted Visakha Sahithi. The Bhimavaram DNR College lecturer, Sripada Sita Mahalakshmi, delved deep into the various problems faced by women all over the globe in general and the Muslim women in particular.

The Sahithi president, Kolavennu Malayavasini, chaired the session. The former professor of Nagarjuna University, Thamma Reddy Nirmala, the founder-president of the Kopparapu Kavula Kalaapeetham, Maa Sarma, and the noted litterateur Puranapanda Venkata Ratnam, spoke. The sahithi coordinator, Jampana Kumara Varma, proposed a vote of thanks.
