Stamp of sophistication

The write-up "I play a taxi driver, but can't drive" (November 16) has a stamp of sophistication.

Right from NSK, we have fine comedians who excel as character artistes too. A sense of humour is the lubricant of life's machinery. That Yuhi has this in ample measure comes through in his tête-à-tête with the singer.

After reading the article, I understand that a sense of humour goes hand in hand with singing. The rapport the duo shared throughout the conversation enabled us to view them the best.

In "Nayyandi Durbar", Yuhi used to pull the leg of the guests. When they turned round to do the same, he had a knack of accepting it with a smile. Yuhi's mission in life to be a sensible jester is laudable.

Interesting

"The art of parenting" (November 17) was interesting to read. Unlike in the past, parents should not impose conditions on children whose decisions these days are influenced by their friends. Instead a friendly approach is needed. There is a Tamil adage: `Tholukku minjinal thozhan' meaning `If your son grows over your shoulder he should be treated like a friend.'

Mammootty's magic

This is with reference to the article "Magic and method" (November 3). Mammootty plays his roles with ease. That Mammootty, a Malayalam star, has become a hit with the Tamil audience is commendable. Who can forget his performance, alongside Rajnikanth, in "Dalapathy"? One wonders why he has not given Hindi cinema a shot.

Contentment, the key

The article "More meaning to life than ever" (November 24) served as a tonic to retired persons. The comments made by the four women serving in different fields after reaching the age of 70 are applicable to men too. I am leading a retired life for the past 14 years. As an office-bearer of a music sabha in the city, I keep myself engaged for nearly seven hours on all working days, which gives me immense satisfaction and keeps me young at heart.

Cooking up a success

The write-up "Movies on the menu" (November 22) was enjoyable. The comparison that Adoor Gopalakrishnan draws between cooking and making a movie was realistic. Though much effort goes into the making of a film and a lot of ingredients go into it, a director can never predict its success. If today's filmmakers took a cue from Adoor there would not be too many flops. To quote him, "Nobody should suffer a film in a theatre, just because someone says it is a great work of art."

Kudos to Romila

Whoever said History is boring will have to eat their words. "History draws house full" (December 1) made interesting reading because it showed the readers how History was "good 21st Century entertainment." It was exciting to go through Romila Thapar's interpretations.

Simple pleasure

Glad to know that the art of story-telling has not faded into oblivion, thanks to the efforts of people like Elly Stuart. A generation hooked on computers and the electronic media should wake up to the simple pleasures of reading and listening to stories ("Yen for yarns," November 30). It's therapeutic as well.
