Art of storytelling
The article "Yen for yarns" (November 30) highlighted the importance of storytelling through the workshop conducted by Elly Stuart. These days one comes across reports about children taking their lives for petty reasons. Such things were rarely heard of when we were young. This, I feel, is because we mostly lived in a joint family where we had grandparents to tell us stories from the Epics or the Bible. That enabled us to know about the struggles and sufferings of mankind. In short, they prepared us to accept the ironies of life. In the present day nuclear families, children seem to spend long hours in front of the TV or computer. They do not get to know about the moral, cultural or ethical values.
