Mike strikes, Sherry blossoms

Taj, people and spicy food draw them close to India, says A. Saye Sekhar

HE DEVELOPED a passion for Taj Mahal when he was in eighth grade and went about penning poetic lines on the spectacular monument and its unparalleled beauty. He had never expected to see the marvelous marble splendour in its full glow but he grew up with a burning desire to visit the symbol of love some day.

And yes, he was understandably thrilled to bits and his joy knew no bounds when the opportunity came his way to actually touch and feel his dream -- the Taj. Visiting the historic place with his sweetheart, Sherry, was a bonus.

Concurs with Clinton

Endorsing the views of former American President, Bill Clinton, on the Taj, the Rotary International Director, Michael McCollough, exclaimed, "Its amazing, incredible and beyond comprehension! McCullough is currently on an official visit to India with wife, Sherry. "I am convinced that what Mr. Clinton said about Taj was true," says Mike, as he is affectionately called in his country.

Hailing from a small city near Detroit in the State of Michigan, Mike and Sherry make a wonderful couple. They shared a few light moments with a group of Rotarians and the MetroPlus team in a suit at Hotel D.V.Manor.

Flashing a broad smile that refuses to fade, Sherry attempts to reveal the only `disappointing' factor of the Taj. "Had Mumtaz been the first wife of the Mughal Emperor, I would have felt even more happy," she says with a smirk on her face. For, she has a great respect for the Indian family system.

Yet, the couple, if asked, would vote for Taj Mahal to be enlisted among the Seven Wonders of the World. Jaipur palace is another monument that has fascinated the visiting dignitaries.

Multiple roles

Mike, a passionate Rotarian, grew in ranks in the movement and became the director. Recalling how he began his profession, he said he was a journalist himself. Of course, he had to don multiple roles, including those of the space-seller, printer and also the general manager of a weekly publication, apart from writing and editing the copy. He was all praise for the projects taken up by the Rotary in India.

Munching "bagara bhaingan" (egg plant curry as they call it in America) along with a nan, Sheery says she is a pure vegetarian. Even dairy products are forbidden. But, she likes the spicy Indian food, while Mike is scared of it. "Little spice is ok. But, not as much as it is in Indian delicacies."

The couple fell flat for the Indian hospitality and say in unison: "Nowhere in the world, it is like this. You are great." And, it's for this reason Sherry says she has liked "the people" in India the most.
