WHAT'S JEWELLERY, except an idea in flight? What's an idea, unless it's well-finished? Motley's ongoing group show of jewellery, footwear, bags and other kitsch (till December 12 at Gallery G) celebrates the breakaway idea in every shape and size. That's what makes it a joyous show, at prices that start at Rs. 80 or so.
While curator Deepthi Sudhindra and friends were arranging displays hours before the show began on December 9, what caught the eye was the stunning range from Auromode. Why? Because their craftsmanship was fine, their eye for detail immaculate, their material a challenge to preconceptions.
Such as a ruched silk bag in tiers of sea blue, navy, aubergine and purple, finished with a lilac bloom. Or its counterpart in dusky blue, with a flower of silken twisted fabric. Or a maroon patchwork bag with its elemental squares to the fore, transformed into an elegant everyday object.
Auromode's jewellery was even more eye-catching. Because precious metals and stones were highlighted by their absence. Instead, chiffon tufts in brick, red, and orange were strung onto a tasseled string for a sunny, Hawaiian-effect necklace. Or silken strands were interwoven into a crisscrossed pendant that revelled in a beadwork finish. Or black and white silken strands celebrated knots and crosses as they wound their way around a slim neck, highlighting the scarf effect.
Deepthi, a jewellery design graduate from Mumbai, explains how the Motley show came together: "I was in Chennai for the Crafts Council of India jewellery seminar in October, when I saw so much exciting, offbeat jewellery happening. I chose some of those pieces for this show." She adds: "I remember I'd broken up a necklace to make myself a pair of crystal chandeliers, and everyone was trying to take them off my ears. So, they're on show here as well."
Her range showcases both semi-precious drop ear-rings in aquamarine, amethyst, blue topaz, tourmaline and other stones, necklaces that string together beads culled from Africa, Varanasi and other sources for dramatic results. For added impact, she offers strands of glass and leather that are wonderfully coral-like in their appeal, and a string of mother of pearl chips that is breathtaking. And clear plastic necklaces that are fun for the young at heart.
Ruchika Chanana's Ra range has earrings in glass, leather, stone, wood and other materials, mixed and matched for everyday appeal.
What else is worth watching for? Omritha's bead-rich export range of earrings and necklaces, with their flavour of a classy Janpath come to town. These eminently affordable earpieces are rich with colour, texture and tantalising form, priced at approximately Rs. 80. One stunning necklace strings mismatched shells onto fine rope for a piece of purest harmony.
Mumbai-based Monisha Jaisingh's footwear range is equally fun-oriented. Emblazoned with embroidered `Hot' or `Star' slogans for appeal, embellished with sequins, embroidery or beadwork, it has all the right cues for an evening out on town.
Classy kitsch
To around out the range, Cimmaron of Delhi serves up classy kitsch for all-comers. Such as screen-printed cushion covers with zari borders, deity-rich with Shiva and family or a benign Durga. And chunky watches inspired by Mother India or Sholay. And coasters emblazoned with Marlon Brando, Marilyn Monroe and other Hollywood icons. Or silk-bordered posters that showcase dramatic Sivakasi labels.
The Motley show is all about top-gear fusion ideas. An appealing range for all age groups, or anyone who welcomes the creative, nonconformist spirit.
