Nature as a cure

Homeopath Robin Murphy says even the West is embracing natural systems of medicine

Robin Murphy: `Any system of medicine can be misused.'

IT ALL started as a teenager's quest for a perfectly sculpted body. Nearly 32 years ago, Robin Murphy was searching for a book on body building in a Michigan library when he came across a book on homeopathy. The love affair with natural systems of medicines, which started way back then, has now made him the Director of Lotus Medical Centre, United Kingdom, and one of the leading authorities in this field of alternative medicine.

Dr. Murphy was in the city recently to participate in a national level seminar on homeopathy organised by Father Muller Homeopathic Medical College and Hospital.

"The West today is starting to embrace more natural systems of medicine, because they have found that drug therapy not only has a whole lot of side effects but also does not offer a permanent cure," says Dr. Murphy. "The West is also beginning to integrate modern systems of medicine with natural systems of medicine," he adds.

Describing this inclination towards natural system of medicine as a good sign, he says nearly 70 per cent people in the West have begun to move towards natural therapy. But when it comes to people practising natural systems of medicine, including homeopathy, he says their percentage could be as low as 20. "But the scope for homeopathy in the West is not as high as it is India, where the potential is huge," he points out.

On the question of side effects in modern systems of medicine vis-à-vis natural systems, he says: "Any system of medicine can be misused. Homeopathy uses natural ingredients. However, most importantly, people should use any medicine natural or modern only when they need it. It is here that homeopathy scores over the rest in that homeopathic remedies are very natural and safe to state the least."

"In the United States, nearly 44 per cent of entire population is on regular drugs everyday and are experiencing side effects. Allopathic drugs are poisoning nearly 100 million people. So they are looking for alternatives. Homeopathy is 200 years old and is always there to fill the gap," he opines.

But Dr. Murphy says that homeopathy is useful only for chronic ailments and not medical emergencies. "In cases of medical emergencies requiring surgery, one should go to an allopathic hospital. But in case of chronic diseases, homeopathy and natural systems offer better alternatives. Even in cases where a person is recuperating, homeopathy is a good bet," he says.

On his own interest in homeopathy, Dr. Murphy says that he was always interested in medical history as a teenager and studied all systems of ancient medicine on his own. "I was quite surprised to see that homeopathy, which I had seen only in old books, was still being practised. It was then than I started studying about it and later came to know that there were institutions offering formal training in this system as well."

Dr. Murphy stresses caution saying it is very essential for physicians to be trained properly in this system. "One could experience a few setbacks in the pursuit of homeopathy. Successful homeopaths will always have three or four alternative methods of cure up their sleeve. If one way does not work, a homeopath should try out the other way and strive for results."
