THE AMBIENCE is appealing to the inner eye and incites visitors to let loose the aesthete in them. The prevailing air of vibrancy and exuberance is contagious as one can instantly experience the craving to be part of the rejuvenating surroundings.
The harmonizing tune of harmonium and the brilliant tabla beats are in perfect sync with the mellifluous voice of the vocalists. The bhavas and mudras of the artistes performing various dance forms like Bharata Natyam, Kuchipudi and folk, move at a rhythmic pace that fills the air with a refreshing fragrance.
Kaladarsini, on the premises of Andhra Loyola College in Vijayawada, is the place where art in its best form awaits to be explored and experienced by enthusiasts. Affiliated to Gandharva University in Maharashtra, the school of fine arts was established in 1990 by the Jesuit fathers' institution. An innovative discovery to promote culture among the student fraternity, the place is the obvious choice for art-lovers in the city. In addition to imparting tips on the finer aspects of various art forms, the reasonable fee structure is yet another factor contributing to its soaring popularity. Open to learners of all age groups, the place offers courses that can be categorized as full-time, part-time and biweekly.
Cultural fete
The place exudes a mesmerizing charm that makes it cynosure of all eyes during the four-day annual cultural bonanza hosted by it. The occasion provides a platform to over 2,000 artistes drawn from nearly 150 institutions across the country to assemble under one roof and display their talent.
"We try to fulfill our social responsibility by picking up 85 students hailing from a poor background and offer them academics as well as training in fine arts, besides hostel facility, all for a minimum fee package. The basic idea behind it is to make them efficient and self-sufficient," explains Arul Joe, the assistant director of Kaladarsini.
Catch them young
After securing a certificate in diploma and degree courses in fine arts from here, many students choose to train the younger lot in their attempt to share and transfer the richness of the skill they have learnt.
A stroll through the corridor is an exhilarating experience. Boys in their prime youth letting themselves drown in the depth of the entrancing beats of tabla, kids engrossed in moving their nimble fingers deftly across their drawing sheets and girls gracefully synchronizing their body movements with the melodious tunes, make an interesting spectacle. So great is the impact of the surroundings that even the uninitiated ones begin to feel the eagerness to try their hand and experience the joy. Overtaken by perplexity, you find yourself pausing to choose from the wide range of courses that vary from each other. Be it veena, guitar, tabla or harmonium, a classical dance or even drawing and painting, you cannot afford to spare a second thought since each skill has its own magical effect and is a blessing in disguise.
The coordination among the founder of Kaladarsini, Joe Sebastian, the Director, Ravi Sekhar and the assistant director, Arul Joe, show their obsession to make the place the most sought-after destination for art connoisseurs. The school has over 260 students pursuing part-time courses and 112 of them opting for full time courses.
