Generation NEXT

With the recent inclusion of fourth generation, this beautiful dwelling is exclusive by all means, says Harjeet Kaur Allagh

STEP INTO the home of G.Mohan Rao, a transport contractor by profession and his wife Arundhati,a perfect homemaker, and you are enveloped by a sense of tranquility and calmness.

The sprawling open yard is made up with a beautiful garden, comprising a myriad plants and terracota artefacts. The pathway leading to the main entrance of the house is lined on either side with glass bowls and earthenware with floating flowers in them.

Numerous varieties of roses in different colours spread their fragrance all over the area.

House of rising sun

The east-facing house opens to the rays of the rising sun into every corner of it. Here lives a joint family spanning four generations, living in perfect harmony under one roof. The house was built almost 30 years ago, but is very well maintained in keeping with the latest trends. The head of the family is Tirupatamma, the matriarch with a kind heart. The house is quaint and beautiful. It has three floors - one for every generation!

A unique concept in this house is the sandstone tiles covering most of the walls in it; these were incorporated to keep the house cool from the hot summers of 'Blazewada' says Mohan Rao. The living area is small and cozy while the dining area is sedate and formal. Family photographs adorn the walls.

The kitchen is always busy with cooks preparing delicacies to suit the tastes of every member of the family. Otherwise, kitchen is just functional.

The first floor has the serene puja room - Arundhati's domain -- and two bedrooms, including the master bedroom.

God-fearing

Her devotion to God is amply displayed by the Tanjore paintings of various Gods, vying for their place in the puja room. The couple has an exclusive sitting area, with just two chairs and a centre table, on the first floor. What add glamour to the two chairs are the two footstools, decorated with antique tiles, in front of the chairs, just to relax at the end of the day's grueling schedule.

She also loves decorating the house with fresh flowers. "Flowers enliven the atmosphere," she says.

One cabinet on the landing is devoted to an assortment of miniature cars, nearly 100 in number collected by Mohan Rao over the years. Another shelf holds the various trophies he has won on the shuttle court. The warmth of the bedrooms wants you to tuck yourself into bed.

3-G & 4-G

Their son, Sailesh, has pitched into carry on the family business along with his father. His bedroom is on the second floor, which isprivate to him, his wife Sanjukta and their infant son, Naga (the fourth generation in the family). All around the house you can see the glowing light emanating from the candles made by Sanjukta and the numerous electronic toys strewn all over, belonging to little Naga.

The entire family embodies the spirit of this lovely home where the modern and the traditional styles coexist in perfect harmony.
