Take another shot of courage. Wonder why the right words never come. You just get numb. It's another tequila sunrise. This old world still looks the same. Another frame

WHEN THE Mexicans first fermented tequila from agave, little did they know that the brew would be a hit in its potent `shot' avatar with its salt and lime wedge chaser.

Served in the traditional Caballito as also solid ice glasses, the tequila shot is a rage around the world, and now in the city with a touch of glamour as a contact sport, a la `body shot'.

"I like the kick after the shot. I had my first shot when my friend got me tequila from Mexico," says Maha Sweta, working in an MNC. "You wouldn't want to nurse your drink. With the shot, you can go high immediately," adds Kaushik, a software engineer and a tequila shot freak.

"It is a more fun related thing in a happy state of mind. You can have 20 and stand on your feet or have one and pass out," says Sudhakar Raju, manager, Bottles & Chimney.

A typical tequila shot is 30-45 ml neat and priced between Rs. 200 and Rs. 400, and is available in a few pubs, with B 52 layered with caffeinated liquor being the hot favourite.

"Shots are mostly made with imported liquor. A lot of people ask for flaming shots these days," says Mohan Ram Reddy, partner, 10 Downing Street.

While the gelatin-based colourful Jell-O liquor shots that are sinfully infamous overseas have not caught on with the twin cities' revellers as yet, a page in the liquor menu of Liquids dedicated to shots in various liquor options is a testimony to the fact that people are getting interested in going beyond tequila.

Enter shooter — straight shot of whiskey neat or even vodka, rum and cocktail. "I definitely would go for a vodka shot and if it is not available, would opt for tequila," says Sweta.

"Liquor shots are very much in vogue. A lot of experimentation is happening. We are doing vodka shots — like vodka pani puri. Also, instead of the traditional shot glasses, the shots are served in interesting dispensing ideas such as test tubes and funnels. Shots have definitely become a craze in Hyderabad," says Shankar Krishnamurthy, Fusion 9. Come New Year, the day will have enthusiastic revellers in town waking up to a tipsy tequila sunrise.
