A new technique this

HERE IS some good news for medicos and those in the business of stopping the spread of deadly and infectious diseases like Hepatitis B and AIDS. Hindustan Latex Limited, in association with Becton Dickinson and Company (BD), has just introduced auto-disable syringes. Launching the product this past week at The Oberoi hotel in Delhi, Gary M. Cohen, President of BD, said," The auto-disable syringe presents the lowest risks of person-to-person transmission of blood-borne pathogens because it cannot be reused. The auto-disable syringes are unique equipment for administering vaccines, in both routine immunization and mass campaigns."

Cohen dwelt on the safety boxes, puncture proof containers for the collection and disposal of used disposable and auto-disable syringes, needles and other injection materials. The safety boxes reduce the risk posed to health staff and public by contaminated needles and syringes. The functioning of the syringes is different from common disposable syringes. After injecting the medicine into the body, the syringe is locked automatically and cannot be filled again.

These syringes will be available in the Indian market soon and their prices will be slightly higher than the common syringes.

Each year, a large number of people die due to infectious disease like Hepatitis B and AIDS that is caused due to use of un-sterilised syringes and needles.

According to government statistics, 60 per cent of all injections administered in the country are unsafe. The latest innovation might just be another step in containing the spread of these deadly infections.
