Tickle your funny bones
IT'S DIFFICULT to be funny. Especially in writing. But ferreting out some great talent in humour writing is what this contest hopes to do. Sulekha, the largest online platform connecting Indians worldwide, and Penguin India have invited entries for a global contest for humour writing.
India Smiles is an open contest in which one can participate by submitting a humorous piece, either fiction or a non-fiction essay.
A panel of judges consisting of Khushwant Singh, Farooque Shaikh, Ruskin Bond, Geeta Doctor, Anita Nair, Ashok Mahadevan and Sushila Ravindranath will select 30 entries that will be published by Penguin India. The best will win Rs. 1 lakh and the two runners-up Rs. 10,000 each.
Thomas Abraham, President, Penguin India, said: "We are looking forward to selecting and publishing the best humour emerging from this contest. And we expect to make this an annual event, with a new theme each year." The book will be published as India Smiles: 2005 and will be available for sale in August 2005 all over India, South Asia and Singapore.
Information to enter the contest can be found on ww.sulekha.com/penguin.
The deadline is February 28, 2005. Entries must be limited to 1,500 words and can be mailed to contest@sulekha.net
