Beauty lies in the eyes
|
The first signs of ageing appear around the eyes. Here are a few tips on eye care
|
THE EYES mirror a person's personality and health. They are also the most important beauty assets of the face. The skin around the eyes is the first to show signs of ageing as they develop wrinkles faster. This is because the skin around your eyes, especially on your eyelids is thin and sensitive. Eyes are exposed most to dust and UV rays. Also as we tend to rub them often, the germs on our fingers affect the skin. However, a little care and by using the right beauty products you have a beautiful pair of eyes.
Here are a few tips:
* Wear UV blocking sunglasses whenever you step out in the sun. Sunglasses are not only fashionable but help prevent damage to the delicate skin around your eyes. Check for the UV protection sticker before buying a pair of dark glasses.
* Avoid soap to wash your face. Soap tends to darken the skin on the eyelids. Use a face wash and go in for one that suits your skin type.
* Moisturise your eyelids regularly. As the skin around the eyes is sensitive, a regular face cream will not do. There are special eye gels and creams available. These should be applied only at night. Choose your eye cream with care. Follow these rules:
- Go for a reputed brand, preferably an Indian one as it will be ideal for our skin.
- Read the label carefully and look for firming agents such Vitamin A and Vitamin C. This helps to keep the skin firm.
- Always apply the eye gel or cream with your ring finger to avoid too much pressure around the eyes. Pat the cream gently.
- Always keep your eye cream in the refrigerator.
- If you want a home remedy, powder almonds in the mixer and store in an airtight bottle. In the morning or at night mix with milk to make a paste and apply around the eyes. Keep for 15-20 minutes. Wash with warm water. Alternatively you can massage your eyes with warm vegetable oil (almond or sesame).
* If you are using a sunscreen, use a mild one for the area around the eyes.
Eye exercises
* Do a few simple eye exercises on a daily basis to help blood circulation around the eyes:
- Keep the head still and relaxed gently move the eyeballs up and down six times. Repeat 2-3 times.
- Move the eyeballs six times from side to side without any force or effort. Relax and move the eyeballs again clockwise, and then anti-clockwise. Do it four times.
- Palming sit in a comfortable position and cover your eyes with your palms. Do not press the eyes. Palming reduces strain. It relaxes the eyes and the surrounding tissues.
Balanced diet
Eat lot of fruits and green vegetables. Vitamin A is essential for the eyes. Lack of it in the diet could affect the health of the cornea and might cause night blindness. Important sources of vitamin A are cod liver oil, whole milk butter, egg yolk, yellow and orange coloured vegetables such as pumpkin, carrot, tomatoe, mango, papaya, melon as well as green leafy vegetables.
* To relax tired and puffy eyes, dip a cotton wool pad in cold tea and keep it on your eyes for 10-15 minutes. You can also try washing your eyes with warm water to which a little salt has been added. Or dip a cotton wool pad in a saltwater solution and keep it on your eyes for some time.
Eye make-up
Highlighting the eyes is the most important part of make-up. Many of us do it everyday. Follow these do's and don'ts.
* Use only reputed products.
* Remember to thoroughly remove your eye make-up with a cleansing milk before going to bed. The cleansing milk should be a little greasy, and not watery.
* Special eye make-up removers are available in the market. These removers are good as they dissolve the mascara easily without tugging at the delicate skin around the eyes. Be extra gentle while removing the make-up.
* If you wear contact lenses always remove your lenses before taking of your eye make-up.
* The most important is sleep. Without adequate sleep, the eyes can look puffy, blood shot, and dark circles will appear. Make sure you have your beauty sleep of 7 to 8 hours. Close your eyes and relax whenever you find the time.
