Stop! No entry

After much humming and hawing Richmond Road and Residency Road have finally been made one-ways. While the traffic police struggle to cope with the exponentially increasing vehicle population in the city, commuters ask whether there is only `one-way' to solve the traffic jams that gridlock the city during peak hours. ANAND SANKAR tracks those who insist there are no two ways about and those who holler `Stop!'

Because of the one-way system, we are losing customers daily. People don't want to take the trouble of going around in circles and it is very difficult to find parking. Even the traffic is not smoother. The problem can be solved if parking spaces are allocated in each building.

Earlier, even three vehicles couldn't move during one signal at Richmond Circle. Now vehicles cross the signal very smoothly. But the only worry is crossing the road. The police must make some arrangements to make this easier.

It is very difficult to cross the road now. The traffic doesn't stop at all. It just keeps flowing constantly. I think the police must take immediate action to provide safe crossing zones for pedestrians.

BPO employee

There is no problem now. It is very easy to catch the bus now. Even though the walk is long, the buses move very fast. But it's a bit difficult to cross the road because of all the traffic. Otherwise the system works.

Nagaraj
Systems engineer

We are very happy that the one-way system has been implemented. We are the ones who bear the brunt of traffic jams. We are sick and tired of standing in the dust and fumes all day. We are ready to assist anybody who confused about the routes. Now traffic flows smoothly.

Ratnagiri
Traffic constable

The one-way system works in some places and doesn't work in some others. Though the traffic flow is better now, there are still traffic jams on Mission Road and Brigade Road.

Raja
Autorickshaw driver

Traffic jams are still there at Mayo Hall and Brgade Road junctions. You have to still wait for 15 minutes to half an hour during peak hours. I don't think one-ways will solve traffic problems.

Bharathimohan
Bio-medical service engineer

Let us see how the system works over a period of time. What is the alternative to one-ways? The roads in Bangalore are very narrow and they cannot support two-way traffic. Thus there is no alternative to one-ways.

Matthan
Senior citizen

The situation is horrible. There is so much confusion. If I have to go home I have to take a roundabout route. I think one-ways are a good idea but they inconvenience the public a lot.
