From makers to hawkers

Any guess what greeted the students from 38 universities who participated in the five-day South Zone Inter-University Youth Festival at Andhra University every morning apart from the steaming cup of 'kapi' (coffee) in the canteen?

It is 'Vaisakhi' the four-page multi-colour bulletin brought out by the students of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism of AU.

The bulletin was brought out by the students for all the six days from December 17 to 22 under the guidance of Bobby Vardhan, D.V.R. Murthy and C. Ramakrishna, the department faculty.

According to Prof. Bobby Vardhan, this was a learning experience for the students, as they had to work in a simulated real life scenario. "The students not only had to report and edit their copy but had to work against time and deadlines," he said.

Apart from filing the reports and editing the copies the students lent their hands in page making, colour correction and checking of proofs.

"By the time the first copy used to roll out at the press it would be 3 a.m., and that was not the end of their role. They used to distribute the copies at different hostels where the students were lodged and at the venues. They were the makers and as well as the hawkers," he added.

Content

The bulletin comprised a comprehensive report of the day's happening; a page exclusively dedicated to lens view; and a gossip-cum-feedback column in lighter vein, titled 'Yours Sincerely'.

Feedback

"It was nice to read the 'Vaisakhi' news bulletin at the breakfast table every day. It gave an overall view of the happenings. Moreover, it was our voice - the voice of the youth. I will be taking a copy of all the issues back home," said C. Vigneswaran of Madurai Kamaraj University.

The team

The team comprised Prasad, Visu, Venki, Sudha, Sarat, OVK, MS, Jyothi, Sudheer, Vicky, Ashwin, Pavan, Anand, Murali, Saptagiri and Nagesh.

Good show!
