AS an ardent lover of Carnatic Music and as an admirer of the owner of that enchanting voice- M S Subbulakshmi, I felt it as my bounden duty to pay my homage to that songbird of Madurai. MS was rightly called `Gokila Gana Isaivani' as her rapturous songs not merely mesmerised the packed audience but left them stunned and stupefied, clad in layers of overwhelming flow of music - smooth gentle and frictionless in its flow. Her music 'hath charms to soothe the savage beast' as stated by Mr. J. Vasanthan. No wonder, her music made her stoop to conquer' the great hearts of Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and the Father of our Nation. Mr.Vasanthan has aptly remarked, `The queen of music had moved us to the very depths of our souls.' MS could be likened to the holy saints of ancient Bharat as she imbibed the spirit of that holy saint Meera, not only as an artiste in the film entitled `Meera', but in her actual life too. She was the compendium of all ethical values such as endurance, broad sympathy for the suffering lot and total self-surrender to God. She would be well compared to that great philosopher Dr Radhakrishnan as she lived up to her `philosophy of music', namely attaining divinity through sangeetha. No one need go through the puranas tomark the history of saint Meera - one may simply recall the role of that great artiste in `Meera' in which she has identified herself wholly with the puranic and historic Meera. The world of Carnatic Music would always cherish the memory of this lofty personality `Gokila Gana Isaivani'. MS not only for her Carnatic sangeetham and devotional songs, but also for her scintillating songs in films. A real tribute to MS will be to release a stamp embossing the `divine face' with a gentle smile of that towering personalityholding veena in her blessed hands.

K.S. Padmanabhan,
Madurai-20.
