Amarjit Singh and Tajinder Kaur have taken great care to adorn their dwelling tastefully, says HARJEET KAUR ALLAGH
|
A NARROW staircase belies the wide main entrance which almost prompts you to say-"khulja sim.sim". Enter the home of Amarjit Singh and Tajinder Kaur and you are surprised by the spaciousness and size of each room.
Born and bred in rural Uttar Pradesh, Amarjit ventured out to seek a fortune and found it in the industrial Vijayawada, in 1973. He married Tajinder, a local lass who was born and bred here. In fact, the couple recently celebrated 25 years of togetherness by throwing a big bash for their friends.
A home-maker
The aesthetic sense of the occupants of the house is evident right from the passage that has been brightened up by wall hangings of three Chinese maidens welcoming you into the home.
Tajinder is behind the exquisite embroidery work. Married off at the tender age of 16, she honed her skills in various arts of home-making by trial and error-whether it is decorating the home, reading, embroidery, painting, cooking or keeping herself and her family fit, she has done it with dexterity and determination. The hall is roomy, so much so that nearly 20 guests could enjoy a cozy chat session sitting at the place.
The arrangement of furniture has been done keeping in view the key factors of comfort and style. Cushy sofas and chairs with a unique table at the center, with a carved base and a square double glass top adorn the room. A table given a shape of a cradle and a glass ledge are a few other items on display.
Feng shui
In this open setting, you have in a corner an antique rosewood-carved love seat overlooked by an ornate mirror covered with flowers and greenery to make you feel a part of an arbour rather than a room. The place leads you to the dining area that has a round table finished in teak, for eight persons. Round tables are a norm these days.
Especially because according to Feng-Shui, tables with corners create disharmony while round tables denote togetherness. A natural addition to the dining area is the well equipped but compact kitchen, made to suit the tastes of her fussy son and the `ever ready to adjust' husband. The master bedroom is enormous! With a massive headboard lined up with books, night lamp, table clock and family pictures, the bed occupies the central space.
A sofa-cum-bed with a cozy quilt in vibrant colours paired with cushions occupies one corner for their son to snooze in when he desires to be with them. A dressing and bath area leads to the bedroom. The bathroom is huge with a big bath-tub to cool yourself during the blazing Vijayawada summer days.
Fitness freaks
The exercycle and weights in a corner bring to the surface the fitness freaks in them. The couple spends at least 2 hours exercising and playing badminton, every day. The guestroom is comfortable and cozy with a well-equipped dressing room and a bathroom.
Gurkirat, their only son, is the apple of their eyes. Born after 10 years of their marriage, the boy ushered in joy and completeness in the couple's life. Reflecting the taste of a modern teenager, his room is equipped with a T.V, a music system, a computer and a telephone. Music is his passion and whenever feeling low, he turns to music to seek solace. After all, music heals, they say.
The house reverberates with melodious and peppy numbers when he is at home. Hanging out with friends is what he revels in when he is not studying.
