Master languages online

Linguaphone has designed a simple programme to learn English and other foreign languages.

LEARNING A new skill can be difficult if the method employed is burdensome. After the initial enthusiasm wears off, you give up. Linguaphone, a worldwide institution that provides resources for learning English and other foreign languages, has designed an online English learning programme that is simple, stimulating and not at all taxing.

This programme meant to supplement the other resources Linguaphone provides, was unveiled at a get-together organised for the staffers of the city-based Lotus Learning Pvt. Ltd., which promotes the Linguaphone way of learning English and other foreign languages, on the occasion of Lotus' "20th birthday".

A placement test, which keeps changing from time to time, takes a measure of your English language abilities and slots you into one of the four levels. The learner is encouraged to take up frequent tests that will "chart his progress". Advanced learners may take up the modules Daily English and Business English. Daily English makes available articles from journals and newspapers around the world. As these articles change from day to day, the learner is always introduced to new words and new sounds. What is more, he is also provided with an opportunity to enlarge his worldview as everyday he is presented with new topics. Presentation of radio broadcasts and television capsules makes the module complete. Once a learner has read the article or listened to or viewed the broadcast, he is put through interactive exercises, which range from true or false, multiple choice, fill in the blanks to free-writing questions, to test his comprehension. All the while, a Peter Collins' English Study Dictionary is ready to give the learner instant translation for words too grand for him, at the touch of a button. A free-text search allows the learner to dig up an archive of articles on topics that interest him. The module Business English, which teaches the effective use of English for business purposes, dwells on British and American terms and phrases, real life business situations and features authentic speakers using international and regional accents.
