Big money in Scrabble
THE VERSATILE game, played with such gusto at coffee shops across the country and by hundreds of kids when they are unwell in bed, is also a professional sport. Scrabble in the big league is hugely different from the playful wrangling over rules and flexible use of proper nouns when friends collect over the board game.
Scrabble fans will get a glimpse of the big league in January when Bangalore plays host to a three-day international tournament hosted by the Karnataka State Scrabble Association (KSSA) along with iGATE Global Solutions.
The event will see the participation of over 35 international Scrabble players, including Nigel Richards, considered among the world's best. Held at iGATE's corporate headquarters at Whitefield, the tournament will be held in 24 rounds with participants from countries as diverse as the U.K., Australia, Malaysia, Thailand, Pakistan and Kuwait. The total prize purse is expected to exceed Rs. 2,00,000. As a run-up to the main event, KSSA is hosting the iGATE Corporate Open Scrabble Tournament on January 8 for corporate Scrabble enthusiasts, and on January 9 for other residents of Bangalore. Both contests will be conducted at the Karnataka Badminton Association and will entail no participation fee.
For registration details, contact KSSA at prashanthms@yahoo.com or call 20105627/23447131.
