Folk touch to festivities
Colourful Theyyam mask
TO USHER in the New Year, DakshinaChitra will come alive to the rhythms, movements and colours of different folk dances of South India at a `Village Festival' to be held from January 1 to 10. It will be a unique opportunity to witness the rich and varied folk art forms of South India all at one venue. Folk dancers from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala will perform throughout the day and to complement the dancers, Margazhi Magic, an array of crafts will be on display at a craft bazaar. Pattamadai pai, ikat textiles, Karwar ornaments and more will form part of the exhibition.
Visitors to DakshinaChitra can enjoy Mayilattam, a folk dance from Tamil Nadu, which showcases the splendour of a dancing peacock, with colourful feathers. The dancers imitate the movements of a peacock to the accompaniment of traditional folk instruments. Theyyam, the ritualistic temple dance from Kerala, will be performed by a troupe led by A.V. Kunhirama Panicker from Kannur. Two types of Theyyam will be performed - Karingutti Chathan Theyyam and Bhagavathi Theyyam.
Dancers from Andhra Pradesh will perform Lambadi dances which are inspired by the movements associated with daily tasks such as harvesting, planting and sowing. The costumes, embroidered with glass beads and shining discs are picturesque and complemented by ornate jewellery.
Another big attraction is the village marketplace - `sandai' - where vendors from the local villages will create a rustic ambience. Merry-go-round, cotton candy, groundnuts, toys... will complete the picture.
To make the festivities more memorable visitors can get to sample authentic south Indian cuisine from all the four States at Kanali, the restaurant at DakshinaChitra.
