Art teachers and professionals get together to celebrate nature

ART HAS always fascinated people. It brings to you images that have lingered on for long in the artist's imagination. The green canopy, misty sky, pristine blue waters... they have a special place in an artist's world.
The ongoing art exhibition organised by the Oviya Kalai Kuzhu (Academy of Artists), Coimbatore, is a celebration of nature. The event, organised for the seventh year at Sri Nehru Vidyalaya, R.S. Puram, showcases more than 80 paintings by professional artists and art teachers.
Oils, watercolours, poster colours and paper collages have been exhibited. "Exhibitions like this help generate interest about art. The awareness level has definitely improved in Coimbatore. The number of art exhibitions being conducted in the city only proves this," says V. Kumanan, treasurer of the kuzhu.
Nature, wildlife and scenery are the dominant themes in the exhibition. The oil paintings of artist S. Ilangovan stand out for their sheer workmanship. Like many others, he has chosen to portray nature- rivers, mountains and waterfall.
Paintings without brush
Palette knife paintings, which bring out rough textures beautifully, are also on display. The palette knife technique is suitable for paintings that need a layered finish. R. Varadharajan, an art teacher from Karamadai, has perfected this art. His works, including a painting showing water running through rocks and another depicting boulders on a railway track (reminiscent of the Nilgiri Mountain Railway) are some of the prominent exhibits in this section.
An award-winning painting of the artist (with friendship as the theme) has also been exhibited. The paper collage of M. Sundaran, an art teacher from Erode, featuring a woman, catches your attention. The artist has taken special care to portray the `skin tones' by using appropriately coloured paper.
You can also find `wet on wet' works, fascinating still life paintings, oil paintings done using the watercolour method and patchwork techniques and pencil drawings. The exhibition, open between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m., concludes today.
