SELECT MEMBERS of the Karnataka Golf Association had an interesting experience recently when four British PGA golfers conducted a coaching clinic as well as an exhibition of trick shots. The club had extended invitations to 50 people to attend the clinic as well as the show and every member went back elated.

Beverly Huke, an eight-time winner on the European Ladies PGA tour, Claire Waite a top amateur till she stopped playing competitive golf, Mark Arnold an ace in the short game and Peter Cane whose grand finale of the clinic was the highlight, spent time with club golfers and handed out useful tips. Aspects such as grip, stance, tempo and timing and then moving on to chipping and putting were taught.

This was the second year that such a clinic had been organised. Last year the foursome visited Chandigarh, Delhi and Ananda Spa on a similar tour.Beverly Huke believes that there is enormous potential in India. She was very impressed with the talent available and hoped that with proper guidance; Indian golfers right from the ranks of juniors, amateurs, ladies to professionals would be able to stand out on the international circuit. Beverly incidentally has written a book Teaching Methods, a manual for coaches and instructors.

All four in the team have done a comprehensive three-year apprenticeship prior to becoming full time teaching professionals. The group had visited Mumbai and Hyderabad before conducting their clinic at the KGA. The event was sponsored by RDC Worldwide Golf Clinics and co-sponsored by CNN. The finale of the event was an amazing display of trick shots by Peter Cane. Using all sorts of clubs including bent putters and drivers, Peter showed his prowess over the game. One part of his show had him calling upon an intrepid member of the club standing hardly 15 feet away from the tee box. Peter challenged the spectators that he would be able to drive the ball from the tee through the legs of the daredevil spectator. We don't want to give the game away, but suffice to say only one of the balls in question was shattered.

Peter showed what a big hitter he was and impressed all with his shot control.. He could make the ball veer to the left or right and even land in the lake at will. Very aptly, Peter's trick shots are part of a show called The Unbelievable Golf Show. He took over a couple of hours setting up the equipment needed for his show and for the club members who attended it, it was well worth the wait.
