They came, they disappeared

Year 2004 saw many a new face on our silver screen. But all failed to impress.
|
WHILE THIS year, Amitabh Bachchan topped the list of films he worked and being offered, some new faces struggled to make a mark even in their debut films. As far memories can stretch, here is hardly any face of the year, which one could remember to categorise as charismatic and different. A stormy marketing of Rok Sako To Rok Lo didn't help debutante Manjari Fadnis to swim safely ashore as "the nation's new sweetheart" despite the fact that she is held as fresh and innocent face among many. Though the Abbas-Mustan discovery in Tarzan - The Wonder Car, Ayesha Takia, did score a few points as an actress yet she was as easily forgotten as was remembered as the Complan girl. Model-turned actress Gayatri Joshi, who made her debut in Ashutosh Gawarikar's Swades provided the fraternity, who believe that models can just can't act, ample chance to reaffirm their faith. Another model-turned actress Udita Goswami in Pooja Bhatt's directorial debut Paap too came into people's scrutiny, more because of misleading, revealing promos than her acting skills. She did a fair job though.
One charming face that reminded many of our yesteryear heroines was Divya Khosla in Anil Sharma's Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Sathiyo. This is one face that has the capacity to make you forget her average acting skills for sometime.
Vijaypat Singhania plunged into film production through Woh Tera Naam Tha. Directed by Kuku Kohli, it failed miserably at box office which also marred the performances of another model-turned actress, a successful one though in Tamil and Telugu films, Kanchi Kaul, whom you can see in a diamond and cell phone advertisement now. Shalini Paul in the same film met the same fate.
No talent
Then we had the likes of Meghna Naidu trying to do a Mallika Sherawat in Hawas, but failed miserably. Skin minus talent doesn't always help dear! Similarly, Rashmi Nigam in Popcorn Khao...Mast Ho Jao proved to be bitter and untenable. And Sheen in the film with the same name had no sheen to remember.
And now, we have much-talked about Soha Ali Khan, one among Ayesha Takia and Sanjana in Dil Mange More, only if she can win over people like her beautiful mother Sharmila Tagore did.
Among actors, you might feebly recall Vatsal Sheth in Taarzan - The Wonder Car. But definitely not for his acting because of his grown-up baby looks. And also Yash Pandit in Rok Sako... though it is not exactly his debut film. The boy belongs to that Kumar Gaurav genre, with innocent looks and gym-honed physique, he looked fresh yet couldn't quite make his mark as the film bombed at the box office.
But Kunaal Kapoor in Meenaxi - Tale of Three Cities left an impact. After all, it needs an M.F. Husain to make a novice like him act and leave and impact too! Otherwise an average Arjan Bajwa and Gaurav Channa in Woh Tera Naam Tha, Akshay Kapoor in Popcorn Khao... , Anuj Sawhney in Fun2sh, Shawar Ali and Tarun Arora in Hawas and Nakul Vaid in a total Nana Patekar film Ab Tak Chappan, Audhitya Singh in AK-47 only exhibited the dearth of talent among new comers. Rajshri Production's Uuf Kya Jadoo Mohabbat Hai could not create any magic for Sameer either.
So, as the year is about to roll on to 2005, the yearning for debut talent in 2004 remains just a call in the heart. Yeh Dil Mange More... and here, you know one is talking about quality.
