FUTURE talk

What does 2005 have in store for us? Bejan Daruwalla makes some predictions

MILLIONS ANXIOUSLY wait for his weekly column to read his predictions about their tepid lives. He forecasts financial success for one, happiness and laughter for another and occasionally sprinkles an ominous warning. With just the right blend of pop astrology, charisma and a spot on perception of the public mood, Bejan Daruwalla continues to be India's most popular astrologer.

At the end of yet another year, the 73-year-old former professor of English gives us his estimations of what the future holds in store. To start with, he repeats what he has been predicting for as long as one can remember. "India will emerge as a superpower," he asserts. This time, he puts a date on it. He says the year 2008 will mark India's rise.

"There will be tensions in the Government till August 2005. However, after that, it will emerge stronger and more resilient," says the generously proportioned astrologer. "Manmohan Singh is a Libra and P. Chidambram is a Virgo. Both signs together are compatible and bring about great skill and honesty. I think our country has a bright future. Secularism will also be strengthened," Daruwalla adds.

Age of Aquarius

In his enigmatic manner, the astrologer tells us that we have entered the Age of Aquarius, which stands for connectivity and collectiveness, which will together lead to a more peaceful world. "India and Pakistan will reach a workable truce in the next three years," he states.

"I am not happy with Bush. He made a mistake by attacking Iraq and I suspect that he may not be able to complete his term," he informs us, adding "it will take at least nine months for any kind of peace to come to Iraq." Daruwalla also announces that before 2010 America will have a woman President.

Amitabh Bachchan and Manmohan Singh are two personalities that Daruwalla expects to shine in 2005 and he warns that if the Ambani brothers do not come together by August, "there will be big trouble". On the sports front, Daruwalla confidently predicts that Irfan Pathan will go on to be another Kapil Dev, while Sehwag will continue to sizzle.

On a parting note, the good-humoured astrologer cautions us, "I am not always correct. I worship Ganesha but I am not Ganesha himself." Despite the vague predictions, the mind-boggling logic and the enigmatic mannerisms, Bejan Daruwalla continues to forecast his way to fame and notoriety.
