Career HUNKY-DORY

"I have received offers from Ram Gopal Varma's production house too. But I have decided to work where I feel the most comfortable. I am not ready for Bollywood as yet."

SHE IS a livewire. After her recent foray into Tamil filmdom turned out to be a whopping success, Navya Nair is all charged up. Offers are pouring in. On a sunny afternoon, as she walks in to face the camera, the crowd come in hordes to watch the proceedings, gasps and speaks in hushed tones. Navya presents that oh... so famous pearly grin, all for free. And needless to add, she has made their day. Some unusually bold ones among them call her `Balamani', the name of the character in `Nandanam', perhaps her best role yet. She enjoys the euphoria she generates. Navya had the joy of watching everyone before the idiot box last week when Nanadanam was shown on TV.
Minutes later, as some of her co-stars crack some jokes, she laughs uncontrollably. She is on the sets of `Sarkar Dada'. Director Sasi Sankar explains to her about the scene. For a change, Navya is all serious now. She is playing an IAS officer in the film, you know.
Tamil movies
Now that `Azhagiya Theeye' has been accepted, is she planning to concentrate more in Tamil films?
"Not really. I have lapped up some offers, which I felt were exciting. Like, now I am also acting in `Amrutham', a Tamil film directed by Kannan, who had written `Vedam Puthithu'. In the film I am an ordinary village girl who makes it really big in life, just like, say Kalpana Chawla. My character's name is Amritha and acclaimed actor Girish Karnad is my father in the movie. My character, a brilliant Iyengar girl, who is a student of B. Sc (Astrophysics) is in love with a boy from a lower caste. The boy, an atheist, encourages the girl in her studies and tells her great prospects are in store for her, that she should give more importance to her career than her love life."
Does she think that she looks convincing as a Tamilian lass? Navya laughs. The heroines in Tamil films wear glamorous costumes.
Is she `cool' about that? "So far I didn't have to face such issues. Anyway I am not going to make some statements like `I would never even think about such roles, etc'. Let us wait and see how my career over there develops," she reasons.
She did not have many big releases this year, in Malayalam. What happened?
"Some of projects which were due to start got delayed as a result of the stand off in the industry earlier this year," she explains.
Navya has just completed Rajasenan's `Immini Nalloral' opposite Jayasurya. She is all set to be Dileep's heroine in Rafi-Mecartin's `Pandippada'.
"Before those films start rolling, I will be doing an art film directed by Albert. It is essentially a heroine oriented subject and I will be a tenth standard student in it," explains Navya.
Does she repent having locked horns with director Kamal, after she felt that the role in `Gramophone' was not the way it was originally narrated to her?
Immature?
"Honestly, I do. Maybe I was immature then. I had said what I felt frankly about it but the whole issue was blown out of proportion. Such a gifted director knows very well what is best suited for me and I should have thought so then, before making those comments," says Navya.
And what about talk of Salman `body' Khan offering her the heroine's role in his next film? The beautiful dimpled grin re-appears on her face yet again.
"Yeah, that's true. And I have received offers from Ram Gopal Varma's production house too. For now, I have decided to work where I feel the most comfortable. I am not ready for Bollywood as yet."
Navya reveals that she could not accept an offer from Telugu director Krishna Vamsi too, as she had already committed the required dates to some other projects.
Is she happy with the way her career is going?
"I am. And nowadays I don't have too much expectations about anything in life. That was one lesson I learnt after expecting to win the National award for `Nandanam.' r Almost everyone was sure that I would win it, so I too expected it. Now I take things as they come, in their stride," she smiles.
