Mahiya: Music Today, Rs.65

TO SEE Kavita Krishnamurthi and Ghulam Ali on the cover of an album stirs some hopes in the hearts of music lovers. Between them, they can cover musical modes ranging from devotional to filmi, from ghazal to classical. However, this latest offering is a disappointment. As soon as the first track starts to play, you wonder how these two fine singers got involved in a project like this. The Music Today label is generally associated with more tasteful stuff than this.

Veteran L. Subramaniam has produced, presented and provided additional music for the album.

In the racy songs, at best reminiscent of the blaring loudspeakers of the public transport system, the signature bits by L.S. stand out in lonely comparison. Not an album to be judged by its cover.
