TRACK STAR Gail Devers is one of the few successful sportspersons who has done away with the services of a regular coach. After a stint under the well-known coach Bob Kersee, she decided to devise her own training schedules and methods. One of her routines includes trying to outsprint her dog Kaleb.


EDWIN MOSES, who was once regarded as the best 400 metre hurdler in the world never had any dreams of becoming an Olympic or a world champion. In school, he was a good student inclined towards science and academics. "I never had any ambition to become an Olympic track star or any kind of athlete," he once said.


HEAVYWEIGHT BOXER Mike Tyson was naturally gifted with an extremely strong physique. At the age of 13, he was already so muscular that his weight was more than 90 kg. He made his professional debut in 1985 and won his first 15 bouts by knocking out all his opponents, most of them in the very first round.


PETE SAMPRAS was a great fan of Rod Laver and Ken Rosewall. "There were no US players I idolised. Sure, I respected John McEnroe's talent and Jimmy Connors' intensity. But the players I really admired were the Australians. Those guys were great," Sampras used to say.
