Take your pick from enticing handicrafts and handlooms

WHAT IS special about an exhibition of handicrafts and handlooms, you might wonder. The same old clothes and bric-a-brac in their appointed places, year after year. How boring can things get?
But, organisers decide to surprise you at times. This year's edition of the Lepakshi exhibition-cum-sale at Jayams Hall belongs to that category.
New arrivals include leather puppets from Andhra Pradesh, jute and terracotta jewellery from West Bengal, ornamental meenakari boxes from Jaipur and artistic wooden cloth hangers from Karnataka. But for these, it is primarily regular fare that you get to see in the exhibition.
Since it is Andhra, you have the staple Mangalagiris, Kalamkari and Pochampalli stalls. They seem to draw maximum crowds. Strands of semi-precious stones and glittering bangles beckon too.
Another must-see stall is the one where you can make your own key chain bearing your name. Children and adults alike watch with fascination as the stall attendant deftly inserts alphabetical bead after bead into a ring to make up a personalised key chain.
The rest of the exhibition space is taken up by stalls selling everything from kantha-embroidered sarees and salwars to tie and dye and printed bed sheets from Jaipur to salwar-kurtas from Delhi.
Also available are crochet lace work, Hyderabadi pearls, leather goods from Chennai and brassware from Moradabad. The stall selling wooden carvings and acupressure items is back this time too.
Young girls will find the jute and terracotta jewellery sets (necklace or chocker with earrings) in tune with current trends. The earthy tones and profusion of shades ensure they will go well with any outfit.
A discount is offered on every purchase. The expo, organised by the Lepakshi Handicrafts Emporium, Anantpur, is on till January 11 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
