Broasted chicken? Check it out
|
BROASTED CHICKEN, the desi version of Kentucky Fried Chicken, has arrived in Thiruvananthapuram. Quite popular in the northern part of Kerala, mostly in Kozhikode, and a hit with many of those working in the Gulf, this variation of deep fried chicken is available in a few fast-food eateries in the city.
Three outlets
Served piping hot along with French fries, this dish is served in three outlets (Palayam, Sathamangalam and near Medical Collage) of De Paris restaurant chain in the city. The chicken is deep fried in seven litres of vegetable oil; in a specially crafted `broaster' machine, which runs on electricity.
The chicken, which usually weighs less than a kg, is coated with a powder specially imported from Dubai, before it is broasted, claims Salim Mohammed, one of the partners of the restaurant chain. According to him, the machine was made in Malappuram.
After the chicken is deep-fried until it turns deep brown, the chicken is cut into five pieces and served. The chicken is quite tender and has a bland taste.
This is quite unlike the fried chicken one had tasted at Rehmania in Chala Bazaar, which was quite a hit with many senior citizens in the city. The ideal accompaniment for Broasted Chicken is a sort of bread called Khuboose.
Broasted chicken is available only after 6 p.m. and costs Rs. 160 for one.
