PONGAL 2005 has turned out to be a nightmare for Tamil cinema. Out of six releases only "Tirupachi" turned out to be an average grosser, while the rest have flopped. The trade blames the tsunami and its after effects for the drop in collections. Even star films were not able to attract viewers due to lack of story content or anything new by way of style and presentation. All the films were old wine in new bottles and even the storylines were rehashes of earlier hits. Meanwhile, "Kathal", a bold new love story without any stars and new technicians, continues to rock the box-office. This film, made on a shoe-string budget, has turned out to be a super hit due to positive talk and smart marketing. The moral of the story is that it is a good story with innovative packaging that will click, irrespective of star cast and time of release.
