Balabhasker's new album is about romancing the rain.

"IF EVER you are weary of music, rain and love, you are fed up with life," says Balabhaskar, composer and violinist who has carved a niche in the world of music. Composer of more than a dozen albums and music scores for three movies, `Mangalyapallakku,' `Kannadikkadavathu' and the forthcoming `Moksham,' Balabhaskar's latest album `Mazhayilaro,' which is based on the theme of rain, will hit the markets as a Valentine's Day gift to music lovers.
The album is a journey into the myriad shades of loves, all depicted against the backdrop of rain. Various moods of the rain provide the ambience of the songs. A drenched Anoop Menon speaks of the sentiments evoked by different moods of the rain. It is rain that links the songs to one another. What sets the songs in the album apart is the melody infused into the emotionally charged renderings.
Captivating numbers
There are captivating numbers like `Ottaykkirunnappol oru nokku kanuvan'... . rendered by Minmini and by Vishnu. `Maaleya sandhye... ' sung by Manjiri Babu is almost a gazal and dwells on the twilight rain. The lyrics are by Jophy Tharakan and Arshad, and Vinod and Vishnu have jointly produced the album under the banner of the newly formed Piano Music. As always, one song in the album is sung by Balabhaskar himself. Does it herald his departure from fusion music? No way, Balabhaskar asserts. "Generally, fusion music is mistaken for mixing up of different genres, such as classical, folk and light music. If at all you love music without compartmentalisation, what comes from within would have the quintessence of various types. If we appreciated the music in `The Titanic' that was because there were certain elements of our culture in it. Fusion is not the shallow mixing of various styles of music; it is the amalgamation of cultures that each genre seeks to give expression to," he maintains.
Among his numerous albums, `Ninakkay' and `Adyamay' have been huge hits. Balabhaskar's band `Confusion' had brought out two albums called `Nee Ariyan' and `No Tension.' His new band `Indians' focusses on fusion music and consists of top artistes in the field. Balabhaskar finds classical violin solo concerts the most satisfying, besides fusion. So, what is his concept of music? "Anything good to listen to, including silences. There is intrinsic rhythm and sruthi in everything and the onus is on the composer to position them in a certain fashion. It takes a large heart to locate beauty in everything," he professes.
