An exhibition aims to help those who've survived the earthquake and the holocaust

Traditional skills come into play on the road to self-reliance.
WIDOWS OF those who perished in the Gujarat earthquake and in the post-Godhra riots have come together in a collaboration that has resulted in the weaving, spinning, printing and tailoring of block-printed khadi clothes.
The organisations involved are Vividha, which is run by the women in Vedchi, and Himmat, formed by the women of Naroda Patiya, one of the worst affected areas in post-Godhra riots. Vividha, with its strong beliefs on self-reliance and community work coupled with its love of traditional arts, has always sought out other organisations trying to survive in a competitive market atmosphere.
This quest led them to Himmat, formed by women who were determined to rebuild their lives after riots tore apart their families and livelihood.
The resulting collaboration both brings together the two groups and also promotes the dying art of natural dyeing and block printing.
The sale of the khadi clothes is on from February 1 to 3 at Mount Carmel College (58, Palace Road, Bangalore 560 029. Phone: 22261759).
Between February 4 and 6 it moves to COMMITS (No. 7, 4th Main, Tavarekere Main Road, opposite S and S Exports, Bangalore 560 029. Phone: 51114010/25530923).
