PREMI GOPINATH gives tips for students and parents to tackle examinations without getting into a tizzy.
|
MARCH IS fast approaching and so are the Board Examinations. View it as anything but an ogre. After all, this is where you show what you have accumulated all through your school years. So welcome it and do well. Remember this is just a launch pad for you. Your future depends on the mark list that will faithfully arrive a couple of months later.
By now you must have gone through your subjects at least once. Don't keep any studies for March. The timetable will be well spaced but then that breather is only for a quick revision and nothing more. Keep a cool head. The weather, especially in Kerala has already started becoming hotter up, so the old fashioned glass of water is really a good coolant. Fruit juices would be ideal. Not to forget the good old `bongi' (lime juice in water with salt). Avoid all fried food and fast food. Take energy-giving food. Yoghurt is a healthy must.
Timetable
January is already over that leaves only 20-odd days of February. March 1 is the D-day for most students. Make a time table of your study pattern, that is if you haven't already made one. Start with the difficult subjects when you are fresh. Make a change and get on to the next subject, say after two to three hours, finally when you are getting bogged down get down to languages. When you feel tired just close your eyes and relax or even take a siesta for a while with strict instructions to be woken up after the allotted period. Take a nap when you feel tired. A couple of hours rest will freshen you up. Take some light food and get down to business. Avoid taking heavy food as this will induce sleep. Work out as many problems as you can. Speed is important, so the more you do the faster will be the response. During the examinations, there is no time to think so the questions should be acquaintances not strangers. When working, make copious notes. This goes for all science as well as art subjects.
The formulae and derivatives should be carried about in small pinups for easy reference. So also, dates in history. Remember these are your companions only up to the door of the examination hall.
No tension
Do not get tense. All this happens only because your preparation is not up to the mark. Remember rest is as important as study. So don't go on burning the midnight oil without any respite. If revision is not done properly, your sleep also gets disturbed. It is important that each subject is given its due importance and problems worked out systematically. As examinations approach avoid all extra curricular activities. It is advisable that you keep phone calls to the minimum.
Last but not the least don't forget your regular shower; it helps keep the system cool. So go ahead nothing can stop you in achieving your goal.

Parent's role
YES, PARENTS can be of immense help to their children.
Remember examination time is always a period of stress and strain. Therefore, the passive parent should take the back seat and control the situation without allowing it to get out of hand. It is important to maintain a cordial atmosphere at home. This is mainly to lessen the tension. Any undue conflicts should be controlled at least till the child leaves the house.Help the child to maintain equanimity by helping out in mundane chores like making the bed, ironing the uniform, polishing shoes, sharpening pencils and seeing that the required number and type of pens, pencils erasers and so on are in place. Help the child in the last-minute refreshing of the day's notes. Take care and do not interfere. Help only if you are requested to. . Avoid all heavy meals. Plenty of seasonal fruits, salads and juices are good. Fried food should be taboo.
All kinds of arguments can wait till the end of the examinations. Avoid unnecessary chatter in the house. TV viewing can also take a break.
