Moving on with SHAKTI

Musicians led by Zakir Hussain come together yet again for Shakti Foundation's fund-raiser

A few decades ago when the two percussion masters of the northern and southern traditions came together, they made history. Ustad Zakir Hussain and Vikku Vinayakram are back this time to play for a cause. Supporting them at the Shakti Foundation's fund-raising concert are Taufiq Qureshi (percussion), Selvaganesh (kanjira) and Ganesh and Kumaresh (violin).

Taufiq Qureshi

Selvaganesh, who is currently touring with `Zakir-bhai', says playing with him and his father, Vikku Vinayakram "is fun and a learning experience." It is a treat, according to U. Shrinivas, who has been an `anchor' for the foundation over several years. "I don't even need to talk about the talent of Zakir Hussain or for that matter Vikku Vinayakram. Everybody knows what great musicians they are, the best we have," he says making sure to remind you about each of the other talented artists.

Kumaresh, who is personally involved in various social causes, believes that "musicians have always helped raise funds, it's only now that the media is noticing it in a big way."

Formed 14 years ago, the Shakti Foundation was the dream of a young man, Velan bound to his wheel-chair since childhood. Today eight years after he succumbed to Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, it's his mother Vasanth Raghuvir who has been carrying on the work.

"It takes great courage, having lost your own son and carrying that grief in you, to embark on a journey like this to serve people," says Taufiq Qureshi `honoured to be able to do his little bit for this noble cause.'

Shakti's efforts have been supported by leading personalities of the country. Sachin Tendulkar, A. R. Rehman and Mani Ratnam have recently worked together on a public awareness campaign that will also be screened at the concert.

The foundation also works closely with The Adhiparashakti Medical and Research Hospital, `where rural and underprivileged patients get the best of treatment for free'. Every year funds raised are used to equip a particular department of the hospital; this year it is the urology department that will benefit.
