Orissa on show

ORISSA IS famous for its traditional arts and crafts. The Mangalamayee Regional Rural Development Society, which has been formed by artisan self help groups, is organising an exhibition of Orissa Handicrafts at Good Shepherd Hall, 82, Kodambakkam High Road, Nungambakkam, till February 13.

Applique, stone carving, patachitra, patchwork, art textiles, painted wooden palm leaf engravings, dhokra castings, golden grass crafts, coir toys and filigree work are the main sources of employment for thousands of craftspersons. The artisans are concentrating on wall panels, figures of gods and goddesses and utility items in a number of designs. The MRRD Society has developed many items, both decorative and utilitarian, based on traditional motifs. Check them out at the exhibition, sponsored by the Development Commissioner, Handicrafts, Government of India, Ministry of Textiles, New Delhi.
