MUSHY music

This Valentine's, gift your Significant Other a collection of eternal love songs.

AFTER RED roses, heart-shaped chocolate boxes, and stuffed teddy bears, the latest fad is music albums. If music is what you are looking for to impress your lady love (or lad love), read on for a preview of an album which is sure to do the trick.

Flood of CDs

It is that time of the year when music companies dust their catalogues and create albums featuring every possible love song that was ever written, which is why the market is flooded with everything ranging from repackaged compilations to special edition VCDs of Karan Johar movies. Well, love is surely in the air of the music stores.

As usual, there are far too many options for Hindi music enthusiasts this Valentine's season and one cannot do justice by singling out a specific album. But if you are the kind who likes a firangi flavour to your music, MetroPlus strongly recommends an album called ...Because I Love You (Sony BMG, three-CD set, Rs. 399). There are compilation albums and then there are twin compilation albums, but it is a rare sight to find a three-CD album of 48 love songs spanning over a decade, and each song featuring a different artiste, along with a lyrics book thrown in.

...Because I Love You features an array of artistes such as Simon and Garfunkel of the '70s all the way till Celine Dion. Though the tracks are not classified in any distinct order, most of the newer one can be found on CD-1 while the retro numbers appear on CD-3. Kicking off with the recent favourite "My Heart Will Go On" by Celine Dion, the first CD takes you on a journey of tracks like "Emotion" by Destiny's Child, "Eternal Flame" by Bangles (of "Walk Like An Egyptian" fame), "Feel So High" by Desree and "Take My Breath Away" by Berlin.

The second CD features artistes such as Shakin' Stevens ("Because I Love You"), Cyndi Lauper ("Time After Time"), Simon and Garfunkel ("Bridge Over Troubled Water") and Paul Young ("Wherever I Lay My Hat").

Collector's edition

But it is the third CD in the set that makes the album a collector's edition. Tracks such as "Crying" by Roy Orbison (of Pretty Woman fame), "I Go Crazy" by Paul Davis, and "Caravan Of Love" by The Isley Brothers are relatively rare tracks, which are hardly found in albums these days. The older tracks have been digitally remastered ensuring crystal clear sound.

Nostalgic trip

When this writer played the CD a few days back, it sent his dad on a nostalgic trip to his college days. "It's not very often that you listen to my kinda music," was what he had to say. And if you are gifting this album to your Valentine, you will surely score a few brownie points. If it doesn't work, don't blame the music. Change your date.
