Love and the city

Despite threats from spoilsports, the city looks set to live it up on Valentine's

TRUE TO tradition, the party poopers are up to their usual tricks this Valentine's too. But then, there's nothing much a bunch of spoilsports can do that can stop the heart from beating to the rhythm of love.

Notwithstanding threats from certain right-wing organisations to disrupt V-day festivities, the pubs, coffee shops and star hotels in town have lined up a host of events to pep up romance.

This year, there seems to be a native touch to the celebrations, with legendary pairs being picked out of Indian love tales to woo customers.

The Valentine combos at Café Coffee Day are cases in point, with iconic names like `Romeo Juliet', `Laila Majnu', `Hum Tum', `Devdas Paro' and `Heer Ranjha' being given to coffees, Valentine cakes and different flavours of ice creams.

"Lovers can also dedicate any song to their beloved. We would be playing about 2000-odd classical, filmi and pop songs to enliven the evening," says Coffee Day regional manager B. Thomson.

And then, every couple could walk away with some lovely Valentine gifts. For lovers who would like to have a romantic candle-light buffet with soothing music, Once Upon a Time, the restaurant at Hotel Green Park, Begumpet, is the place to be.

Those wishingto let their hair down, drown some champagne and drinks can head for Escape, the hotel's pub that's been decorated with heart-shaped balloons and colourful welcome arches for the occasion. There would be quiz programmes on the lives of iconic lovers, and the lucky ones can walk away with prizes for the right answers.

Couples looking for fun, dance and cocktails can boogie away the night at Hotel Basera, which has promised to keep its pub, Out Swinger, open till 3 am. "Lovers wanting privacy, to whisper all those sweet nothings, can enjoy special seating arrangements under dim lights. There's also a special buffet and light music," says Akhilesh Kumar, the hotel's banquet manager.

A `rocking party' is being promised at Taj Krishna's T2. Bollywood's item girl Niloufer will perform live, while DJ Mona will lead the participants through the celebrations.

This apart, Hutch is organising a special Valentine bash at Prasad's Multiplex, complete with quiz shows and a host of exciting fun-filled games to mark the occasion. Getting down to the brass tacks, or rather icing and crust, several bakeries have come up with innovative cake designs, all inspired by cute symbols that have forever been symbolic of mush.

And with lots and lots of shops selling greeting cards and gift items and all those little presents that give you the goose pimples down the years, the puritans did better stay off the whole business of throwing a spanner in the works!
