FORMER WEST Indies cricket captain Sir Gary Sobers, who was considered to be one of the best all-rounders in the game, lost his father when he was only six years old. His father was a sailor on a merchant navy ship, which was blown up by a torpedo launched by a German battle ship during the course of the Second World War in 1942.


BASKETBALL PLAYER Kobe Bryant spent nearly eight years as a child in Italy and speaks Italian fluently. Before he was born, his parents used to frequently eat at a restaurant where the waiters used to serve a variety of steak called "kobe". They liked the taste of the steak so much that when their son was born, they decided to name him Kobe!

P.T. USHA who missed the bronze medal in the 400-metre hurdles by a fraction of a second at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984 is often hailed as one of the most successful women athletes in the country. By the age of 12, she was regarded as an athlete with a great future. True to the expectations, she broke her first national record in the 100 metres when she was just 13.
