President's Medal for cop


Urivi Nagabhushana Rao was awarded the prestigious President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service on Republic Day this year. Dr. Rao, a native of Tekkali in Srikakulam District, joined the Indian Police Service (IPS) in 1971 under Uttar Pradesh cadre. Prior to joining the IPS he worked as a lecturer and geologist in the Geological Survey of India after completing his M.Sc. geology from Andhra University.

Mr. Rao held several important positions while serving under Delhi Police. He was appointed as the first secretary in the Indian Embassies at Philippines and Australia. He also worked in the premier security agency of the country Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) for sometime.

Mr. Rao was instrumental in setting up the land and building cell and legal cell for Delhi Police. He was also awarded Ph.D. by IIT - Delhi for his thesis on `Proactive Policy and adolescents'.

In 1977 he was awarded the Police Medal for meritorious service and in 1998 he was given the Golden Jubilee Research Fellowship.

Mr. Rao set up a charitable trust by name Vikram Charitable Trust a couple of years ago in memory of his only son whom he lost in a road accident. The trust is aimed at converting school dropouts into resourceful youth. Though the trust is headquartered in New Delhi it has branches in many other cities including Visakhapatnam. The trust is presently running a training centre at Arilova in collaboration with the Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation and city police.
