Bobby's darling!

More than three decades after `Bobby', Dimple Kapadia continues to be in demand

THE SPRITE has withered but not the spirit - the innocent smile that made the nation go crazy for a 15-year-old Bobby still flashes for flashbulbs, the crowning glory that splashed sensuality in Saagar still bounces for appreciation - Dimple Kapadia still charms youth with her verve, still baffles them with her answers. "You find my smile refreshing. You know Raj Kapoor used to say `don't smile like a horse," Dimple says. Her denials continue, "My hair is not naturally good. I have to take too much care of it."

God's gift

In the age of instant fame, where young starlets are unable to balance showbiz with life, which sometimes culminates in extreme steps as in the case of model Nafisa Joseph, Dimple, one of the first products of instant glory is the right person to give an insight into what it takes to handle instant celebrity. "There is no single way to go about it. I agree upbringing helps but for me it is God's gift."

For many, she fumbled when she entered into the matrimony in teenage, for some she took an eternity to discover her Lekin, Rudaali and Leela image but Dimple is happy with the contours of her career. "I am happy the way life has treated me. When I look back I find that I got the right opportunities at the right time. What I miss is I could not spend time with my children when they were growing. Now I want to make up by enjoying with my children and grandchildren."

This doesn't mean her career is over. "I am busy with my candle-designing and it is doing good." And films are still in her scheme of things. "I have just finished Aur Pal Tham Gaya with Rishi Kapoor."

The `Bobby' challenge

About starlets choosing a Julie or Hawas as the easy way to fame, Dimple, who did Jaanbaaz and Zakhmi Aurat when coyness was the ruling emotion, says the trend is nothing new. "Certainly, the technique and aesthetics have improved but still in some cases the skin show is uncalled for. If you have the body and the story demands exposure, I have nothing against it. However, I don't think the actresses are accepting challenging roles at a younger age. I accepted Bobby - one of the most challenging roles of its times - at the age of 13."

The young crowd returns, so do the naοve observations and Dimple's is back to her baffling best. "To me beauty is inner strength... I am looking forward to bright sunshine... The best compliment I received was from a 15-year-old boy in a restaurant." Has she ever come across somebody like the boy in Leela? "Kaash!"
