Letting your hair down

The participants for Miss Kerala 2005 had grooming sessions with this hair expert.

Reshmi Shetty (in white ) explaining to the Miss Kerala contestants all about hair.

THE 20 beauties, vying to be the `queen bee', listen keenly to every word that Dr.Rashmi Shetty states. The topic for the day is "hair care". And when they finally have the chance to meet the cosmetic physician individually, well, their queries range from the split ends, frequent hair loss to the `fascinating hair colours'. The doctor, who has red streaks in her hair, "the most-in-demand' hair colour now", listens to all the participants in the final round of Miss Kerala 2005 beauty pageant with an elegant smile. And by the end of the session, the faces of the contestants are bright with delight.

Good grooming

"The grooming sessions start just a couple of days before the competition and we just have the time to do the immediate repairs. I am trying to inculcate a habit in the girls to look after their body and the hair in a disciplined way," says Dr.Rashmi, who has completed her medical schooling from Mysore University and has a diploma in Cosmetology from Chester, UK. She has clinics in Mumbai, Bangalore and Colombo and is a member of the `Parachute Advansed Hair Care Advisory'. She has been a panellist for the Sahara Mr. And Miss. Bollywood contest where she was responsible for grooming the finalists on their skincare needs.

She finds Kerala, "breathtakingly beautiful" and feels that "the girls look refreshingly fresh. I am amazed by the length of their hair. "

According to Dr.Rashmi, "hair, which is the crown on one's whole self, adds to almost 27 per cent of beauty."

Are cosmetologists generally perceived as those creating beauty from ordinary mortals?

"Everyone is beautiful in his/her own way. Cosmetologists try to maintain it in the best possible way and of course, to develop it. If something has gone wrong, the cosmetologists can correct it too," she says.

How fashion conscious are the Indians?

"Indians have understood the need to be in their presentable best. It gives a lot of confidence to anyone. And the popularity of television, Internet and the availability of world class brands have had a great effect on this."

But she reminds you, "beauty is not just skin deep. Internal health contributes a lot to what is seen outside."

Fine. But what about all those who don't consult a cosmetologist?

"I have already said about the importance of oiling hair. Using a moisturiser on the skin helps, though we do need to use it less often, considering the high humidity level over here, when the skin is young. Easily available things like sugar and honey can do wonders for your face. Drink lot of water and eat healthy food with a control over your diet."

When she is not burning her head thinking about beauty and fashion, what interests her?

"I have a six-year- old daughter, with whom I would like to spend quality time. Besides, I am a trained Bharatanatyam dancer and love to paint, at times."

Finally, on the beauty front, what will be the scene like, say, three years from now? "Healthy beauty is what Indians look forward to."
