A modern marvel

Saranjeet and Kuldeep have together worked to lend a delightful flavour to their décor, says HARJEET KAUR ALLAGH

EVEN AFTER living in Vijayawada for the last 25 years, Saranjeet Singh and Kuldeep Kaur have managed to retain the north Indian flavour in the décor of their home. While most south Indians go for ethnic and artistic touch, the Punjabi couple likes it to be trendy and modern. A flourishing businessman, Saranjeet Singh built the house in Gurunanak Colony almost 15 years ago but gave it a makeover recently.

The boundary of the house is lit up with numerous fluorescent lamps while the porch has a comfortable divan and chairs where the family members begin their day. As one enters the foyer, he is struck by the grandeur of the structural columns and green climbers hanging from them. The house has large open space for partying and a cozy drawing room to host private parties. The living-cum-dining area is spacious. The gilt-edged intricately carved dining table is elaborate and can accommodate eight persons at a time. The transparent glass top displaying its gild-embedded base provides the table a rich look. Then comes the most sought-after place for chilling out by simply relaxing in the cane sofas with cushions in colourful fabric. The galley-shaped kitchen has cabinets running along the walls, leaving everything within a hand's reach.

Artistic touch

The drawing room is formal and is put to use occasionally. When there is a large gathering, the French doors are left open to accommodate the guests. A lot of care has been bestowed on the décor which is classic with assorted curios placed at strategic points that enrich the look. The splendid oil paintings done by their daughter, Reema, have turned the walls into a virtual art gallery. The puja room exudes divinity. This is the place where family members gather everyday to read the Guru Granth Saheb.

The master bedroom is built on clean and uncluttered lines. The spacious room with two comfortable Victorian chairs and a small center table is where the couple unwinds after a long day's work and surf channels on their huge television set. Saranjeet is a typical Punjabi and knows how to make the best of his life. He is a foodie and relishes the rich and spicy delicacies dished out by his better half, Kuldeep. Playing badminton at the Vijayawada Club and regular visits to the city restaurants on weekend forms an essential part of his routine. Kuldeep, on the other hand, is a homemaker who derives pleasure in cooking and decorating the house besides joining the monthly kitty parties. Regular walk and yoga help her stay fit.

Delightful combo

Reema and her brother, Jaspreet, share the other bedroom where a cute little stuffed toy welcomes a visitor at the door and the siblings appeared to have found a friend in a huge teddy bear that lies on the bed. Posters in delightful colours adorn the door and wardrobes of the airy and bright room. In addition to pursuing a course in fashion designing, Reema loves to paint, swim or go on long drives and chat endlessly on her mobile with her friends, when free.

She also makes lovely candles. Jaspreet is the younger of the two and is studying in inter second year. His obsessions include surfing the net, painting the town red with his friends and plays cricket and badminton. He's also an amateur mimic.
