Film buffs will be treated to a host of German films on women at a festival starting on March 8



From "Rosalie Goes Shopping"

SOME OF the best of German cinema and an Indian film will be screened at an eight-day festival, starting from March 8, International Women's Day, at the Film Chamber Theatre, Gemini Circle. The festival is being organised by the Max Mueller Bhavan, The Madras Film Society and the Indo Cine Appreciation Foundation.

Films dealing with women's issues will be the focus of the festival. The protagonists are all women and the storylines about their feelings and emotions, which land them in problems at different times. How they overcome these problems is dealt with in a mature and sensitive manner.

Four films, including a trilogy, by popular German director Percy Adlon will be screened.

The festival will open with his film "Zuckerbaby" ("Sugarbaby") on March 8, 6.30 p.m. It is a comedy, which traces an impossible love affair between a middle-aged woman and a young man. "Bagdad Café" (March 9, 6.30 p.m.) is about the relationship between two women. The proprietor of the cafe, Brenda, is suspicious of Jasmin who arrives with a big suitcase. How they form a relationship and how it evolves is portrayed in a hilarious way.

"Rosalie Goes Shopping" (March 10, 6.30 p.m.) is about how a woman tries to cheat a bank.

"Celeste" (March 14) is Adlon's first film that is adapted from the memoir "Monsieur Proust" by Celeste Albaret who was Proust's French housekeeper. .

"Jenseits Der Stille" ("Beyond Silence") is a musical masterpiece directed by Caroline Link and will be screened on March 15. Lara's parents are both deaf. She is the only member of the family who can speak and hear.

One day her aunt presents her a clarinet. She starts playing it and gets immersed in the world of music. One day, she is forced to decide as to whether she should take care of her parents or pursue music. The climax is heartrending.

"Lea", to be screened on March 17, is about a girl who is abused by her stepfather when she was a child. From that day she retreats into a shell and stops talking.

A German who thinks that Lea is a carbon copy of his wife buys her. Director Ivan Fila portrays the ups and downs in their relationship.

"Die Poliziztin" ("The Police Woman", March 18) is all about the life of Anne, a policewoman who is unable to draw the line between official duties and personal feelings.

"Mutters Courage" ("Mother's Courage", March 18), directed by Michael Verhoeven, is about a young woman Elsa Tabori who is caught by the secret police while she is on her way to visit her sister. How she manages to escape forms the crux of the plot.

The Indian film "Fearless — The Hunterwali Story" will be screened on March 16. The film is about Nadia, a blonde, blue-eyed beauty who carved a niche in the history of Indian cinema with her stunts, written, produced and directed by her multifaceted grandnephew Riyad Vinci Wadia.
